In the 19th century when women sculptors were scarce, French figurative sculptor Camille Claudel stood out as a visionary artist of her time. Her eventful life was marked by her relationship with artist Auguste Rodin and decades spent in a psychiatric institution before dying in obscurity in 1943. But she gained recognition posthumously around France for complex works including famous sculptures The Waltz and The Mature Age. This major exhibition at the Getty Center presents 60 groundbreaking sculptures to reaffirm Claudel’s legacy.

Guests will see a remarkable common thread throughout these provocative themes spanning almost 1,000 years of artwork. ‘If the dot is influential, it develops into a line or expands into a surface. Later designs continue these vectors, varying or deviating in a process that can continue over long periods. Ultimately, The Original may lose its position, as we forget it as the starting point. Nevertheless, The Original and the power of its originality has fundamentally enriched us,’ he said.

21 Design Sight, Tokyo Midtown

It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design. This also represents something that we see all the time but never pay attention to. It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives. The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. In the heart of Tokyo, Tadao Ando’s Design Sight Museum stands as a beacon of architectural brilliance and design ingenuity.

For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit. This private design museum, Japan’s first, opened in 2007 and was intended first of all as a tribute to past achievements of Japan in the area of (industrial, architectural, environmental and fashion) design. Secondly, it should also function as a beacon of inspiration on how to approach future endeavors from a design and aesthetic point of view. To start, NHMLA will be open Thursdays through Saturdays at reduced capacity.

Like its sister museum NHMLA, La Brea Tar Pits is gradually reopening to the public and will be open from Thursdays through Sundays at present. The pieces are accompanied by a graphic display with a large layout of 50 photographs of products. Taken by the photographer Gottingham, the large images lie on the walls behind the products, so visitors can witness details that are difficult to catch with the naked eye.

Designer Issey Miyake, architect Tadao Ando and sculptor Noguchi talked about the need for a place where Japanese design could be discovered, promoted and shared. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown.

The greatest masters and regular people live to the same age, so let all of us use our time to create wonderful Originals for the future,’ he continued. Furthermore, whereas its seamless steel roof and concrete walls could have made for a cold and overbearing interior, its trapezoidal spaces manage to be both futuristic and intimate. Despite seventy percent of the building being located below ground level, a large lightwell lets in natural light. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a visionary space that celebrates and explores the innovation of design. It inspires visitors to look beyond the conventional and explore the limitless possibilities of design.

Ando’s use of concrete, with its raw and textural qualities, adds a layer of authenticity to the exterior. The play of light and shadow on the concrete surface throughout the day enhances the visual impact, turning the facade into a dynamic element of the overall design. Tadao Ando, known for his minimalist approach and innovative use of concrete, has once again demonstrated his prowess with the Design Sight Museum. The structure seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with a deep respect for the surrounding environment, showcasing Ando’s commitment to harmony between nature and architecture. Opening hours, closure, and admission fees are subject to change depending on each program in Gallery 1&2 and Gallery 3, so please check in advance.

The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor. Most of the volume of the building, which has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground, is buried underground. Once inside, the space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's unobtrusive exterior. The ground floor houses Gallery 3 and shop space, while the underground floor houses two galleries and a naturally lit sunken court. Highlighting Issey Miyake's concept in clothing design of "A Piece of Cloth," Ando devised the idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel.
